Wolf's Bane:
Sustained Investigation 2023-24
My sustained investigation is about Skyler's finding out he's a werewolf and how that affects those around him as he tries to cure it. I wrote a story called "Wolf's Bane" that focuses on Skyler as he discovers he's a werewolf and finds a way to cure it with the help of Max, the Bernese mountain dog, and James.

The Wolf Within
Skyler was going for a walk in the park when he accidentally tripped a warlock, resulting in the warlock casting a werewolf curse on Skyler.

Reflections
Skyler came home in a state of panic, unsure what the warlock had done to him. Once he looks in the mirror, he realizes the physical changes that have happened to him.

You're Home Early
Skyler had been home, trying to figure out what had happened to him when Josh, his older brother, came home early. Not wanting Josh to worry about his physical changes, Skyler did what he could not to let Josh see his face.

Transformation
Josh, trying to make Skyler feel better, took him on a night hike. However, it was a full moon and when Skyler got out of the car, he started to transform into a werewolf as the last light of the evening sun dipped under the horizon.

The Chase
Skyler's wolf side took over and started chasing Josh down the trail, snarling as Josh tried to run away.

The Betrayal of Transforming
Due to so many calories being burned when Skyler transformed, his wolf form was hungry. Josh tripped on a tree root while trying to run away, so he tried backing into the woods, but Skyler wasn't far behind him when he tripped. Within only two bites, Skyler was able to rip the flesh off of Josh's leg as Josh tried to scream.

Temporary Escape
Desperate to get away, Josh backed up, falling into a stream a few feet down. Josh was able to quickly hide under an overhang from the elevated ground, able to temporarily escape from Skyler

A Slow Get Away
Josh gets up and stumbles away, but Skyler continues the chase. Fortunately for Josh, Skyler can't fit into the ditch because of his increased size in werewolf form.

What Happened?
After Skyler transforms back into a human in the morning, he finds Josh barely conscious and gets him help at the parking lot where he meets James. James offers to drive the brothers to the hospital where Josh ends up needing his calf amputated. Once Josh regains consciousness, Skyler tries asking Josh what had happened since he couldn't remember, but Josh was too scared to reply.

You Can Talk!?
Skyler asks to stay with James while Josh is healing, and James allows him to. When they get to James's house, Skyler is met by Max, James's Bernese mountain dog, and realizes he can understand Max as if he was speaking English. As Max talks to Skyler, James shows Skyler around the house.

Transformation Part 2: Electric Boogaloo
After a month of trying to figure out what was wrong with Skyler with help from Max, Skyler was still confused about what was happening to his body. James thought going for a walk might help Skyler, so he took Skyler and Max for a walk at night. Before long, the moon came out, and Skyler became a werewolf. Skyler ran off to find food and returned later to James and Max, his mouth covered in blood, scaring them both.

The Protectors
Max, James, and Skyler search for ingredients to cure Skyler's lycanthropy. Unfortunately, a werewolf pack stops them, guarding the ingredients for the cure. During the confrontation with the pack leader, Skyler tries talking things out to explain why he needs the cure.

Making the Cure
With all the ingredients together, James, Skyler, and Max head home to make the cure for Skyler’s lycanthropy. They follow the instructions of the werewolf pack leader and what Max told them using a mortar and pestle. Once James and Skyler make the cure, Skyler drinks it and becomes human again, his eyes and teeth returning to normal.

Reunion
After Skyler gets cured, he and James go to the hospital to check on Josh. Since Josh was coming out of the hospital with his new leg prosthetic and Skyler was excited to see him, Skyler ran over to Josh and gave him a hug, happy to be reunited with him once again.
